Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk (or almond milk)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring (gel)
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine milk, softened butter, egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until smooth.
  4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients; mix until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about five minutes.
  5. Roll out dough into a rectangle and spread with softened butter. Sprinkle with cinnamon and brown sugar.
  6. Roll tightly into a log shape and cut into equal slices. Place in the greased baking dish and let rise for 30 minutes.
  7. Bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before drizzling with cream cheese frosting made by mixing cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.
